Harmonizing Business Laws in Africa: OHADA Calls the Tune

    Get PDF
OHADA (in English, “Organization for Harmonization in Africa of Business Laws”) is a system of business laws and implementing institutions. Sixteen West African nations adopted this regime in order to increase their attractiveness to foreign investment. Because most of the member-states are former French colonies, the OHADA laws are based on the French legal system. Despite certain economists’ recent, well-publicized assertions that any French-based legal system is incompatible with development, other studies challenge those claims and in doing so outline characteristics that a pro-development system of business laws should possess. A review of selected provisions from OHADA’s corporate law and of OHADA’s institutions reveals that they correspond to those characteristics. Interviews conducted with legal professionals in Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon highlight the local perception that the OHADA regime, while still young, offers both technical and aspirational support for business transactions. The paper closes with a rough cut at measuring OHADA’s success even in these very early days, and with specific recommendations to strengthen the OHADA institutions

CH-47D Rotating System Fault Sensing for Condition Based Maintenance

The Department of Defense (DoD) has mandated the use of maintenance practices based on component condition rather than component time in service or age. This new practice is known as Condition Based Maintenance, and it relies on accurate detection and identification of material deficiencies in system components. Rotor system components in rotary-wing aircraft can be difficult to monitor due to the rotational environment experienced by the sensors and the difficulty of signal transmission. Current methods are able to detect the existence of a fault in the rotor system but cannot link the vibrations experienced in the airframe to a specific material defect. This results in inefficient maintenance practices associated with identifying the faulty components for repair or replacement. This research seeks to create a model which will enable the identification of component deficiencies in the rotating system from vibration characteristics experienced in the fuselage, in order to increase maintenance efficiencies leading to cost savings and increased operational readiness for in-service CH-47D aircraft

Examining the Benefits of Adding Mindfulness-Based Programs in the Curriculum of Undergraduate and Graduate Social Work Programs: A Review of Literature

    Get PDF
Undergraduate and graduate students are often enveloped in an array of stress and anxiety, and it is no surprise that undergraduate and graduate social work students are faced with high amounts of stress due to vicarious trauma as a result of exposure to via coursework and experiential learning. It also comes as no surprise that social work professionals are exposed to numerous stressors causing the burnout rate for social workers to be high. Mindfulness techniques are used in various cultures and religions around the world with the purpose of synching mind and body. Using mindfulness techniques, individuals can be fully aware and present, which allows for the identification of emotional and physical patterns and adjustment to provide the most benefits. Awareness and adaptation of one’s emotional and physical sensations, especially in a helping profession like social work, is crucial in combating stress and burnout. This thesis will examine various articles and peer-reviewed studies conducted on mindfulness techniques being implemented in undergraduate and graduate social work curricula. This thesis will hopefully link mindfulness training added to the pedagogy of undergraduate and graduate social work programs to a decrease in the stress and burnout rate for social work students
